Vishal Gulati says he was ‘genetically predisposed to be a doctor.’ But as it turns out, he was born to be a pioneer in open data, digital health and global venture capital.
During his medical training, Vishal realized that the practice of one doctor seeing one patient at a time just wasn’t scalable. Rather than spend his career practicing medicine, as his father and grandfather did before him, Vishal took a right turn into the Human Genome Project to help start of open data movement. He went on to become a key driver in the creation of the digital health ecosystem in Europe.
Called an “agitator by nature” (in a good way) by HealthXL’s Martin Kelly, Vishal has always been adept at seeing the trends coming. 16 years ago he took his talents to venture capital where he focused initially on India and now looks to Europe for digital health innovation in his role as a partner of Draper Esprit. Vishal says that his investment thesis is informed by his medical training, “which protects one from the delusion that making major healthcare advances is ever easy.”
