A self-described geek, Dorit Donoviel was happily pursuing a career in molecular biology until a chance encountered diverted her course to space medicine. Today, Dorit directs the Biomedical Innovations Lab, Center for Space Medicine, at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She also serves as Deputy Chief Scientist at The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) and Assistant Professor, Dept. of Pharmacology and Center for Space Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine.
One of Dorit’s main missions is encouraging health entrepreneurs to work on problems relevant to space medicine; her job is to evaluate new technologies and countermeasures that have the potential to transform medical care in space and on Earth. By solving space medicine challenges, particularly those that result from the biological impact of long stays in space, she also serves to address medical challenges faced by earth-bound life forms in a wide variety of medical segments including oncology, urology, opthamology and beyond.
We’re excited to discuss her journey to infinity and beyond, and to learn what it takes for researchers – and entrepreneurs – to have the right stuff to make a difference.
